Dick Malcom Humanitarian Scholarship: $2,000

SUMMARY

This scholarship was created in memory of Dick Malcom, our friend & colleague, as well as the Fleet Administrator for State Farm Automobile Insurance. We want to remember Dick for his impact in the Fleet Industry but mostly for his kindness to others, his ability to bring the best out in whoever crossed his path with calm and humor. Dick Malcom was a true humanitarian, both in life and his career. In his honor, we have created a scholarship that will be awarded to a high-school senior from his alma mater high school in El Paso, IL. The recipient will be chosen on who best demonstrates his genuine concern for helping people and improving the welfare and happiness of others.

ELIGIBILITY

Open to graduating El Paso-Gridley High School Seniors who demonstrate Dick’s humanitarian spirit. One (1) qualifying student will be selected and awarded $2,000. Award is contingent upon the recipient following the award criteria as outlined in the “Award Amount” section below.

REQUIREMENTS

  • High school GPA of 2.0 or greater or a GED certificate
  • Enrollment in one of the following areas of study Auto Technology, Auto Mechanic, Engineering Tech or Skilled Trade Program (Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, Construction etc.)
  • Completed essay question based on scholarship you are applying for
  • 2 letters of recommendation
  • Official high school or GED transcript
  • Completed essay (see below for details)
  • Listing of extracurricular/volunteer activities (if applicable).
  • Completed description/essay of financial need
  • 1-2 minute video submission
  • Signed model release form (part of the online application form

ESSAY & VIDEO GUIDELINES

ESSAY (400-500 words): How would you benefit from being the recipient of the scholarship you are applying for and why is this scholarship important to you? Be sure to include your area of study. We’d also love to hear about your educational goals and career aspirations.

VIDEO (1-2 minutes): Include your name, area of study, college name or trades program name. Speak to why you have chosen your field of study, how and/or why you decided this is the career path are pursuing, and what you would like to accomplish upon graduating from your program. Feel free to add any other information you feel is relevant, including any mentors that helped guide you, personal experiences or roadblocks, achievements you are proud of, etc.

AMOUNT

$2,000 will be awarded for tuition and fees.

OTHER SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS

If you are chosen as the recipient, you will need to furnish verification of enrollment from your college financial aid office. PLEASE NOTE: Be mindful of all due dates for required documents as lateness could impact your award. You also need to furnish a quote (2-4 sentences) on the meaning of the scholarship and consents to its use on The Hourglass Foundation’s website and other media. Further details will be provided upon award announcement.

Award announcements will be made by May 15, 2026.
